The Waterhouse Family

Now with the fourth generation of the Waterhouse family, since 1926 C. Waterhouse and Sons has always had a member of the Waterhouse family at the helm; actively involved in the day-to-day management of the business and always accessible to the many families we have looked after.

Today there are no fewer than 5 members of the Waterhouse family who work directly within the business, continuing the long established tradition of the company being a truly family run business; with traditional family values, by way of offering a caring service of the very highest quality.

Dorothy Waterhouse

A former nurse, Dorothy Waterhouse began helping her father with running C. Waterhouse & Sons in her early 20's. As her father approached retirement Dorothy took on more of the undertaking work, from cleaning cars, to doing the accounts and everything in between.

Several decades down the line and she has seen death in many forms, from harsh and sudden to gentle and long-expected, but her overriding ethos, which still permeates every fibre of the business today, is to care for the families involved; to encourage a positive attitude and to support their individual wishes and arrangements.

Tim Waterhouse

Tim joined the company 25 years ago and is responsible for running the business on a day-to-day basis, ensuring the highest standards are consistently maintained.

He is a keen golfer and Past President of Heathfield and Waldron Rotary Club. He is also a Local Councillor and is President of Horam Bowls Club.

Clare Waterhouse

Clare Waterhouse has joined the family firm after a career in the legal profession specialising in probate and inheritance tax wealth management planning and still maintains her FILEX qualification

Clare focuses on every aspect of the business and as well as being involved in the operational side, she is the main contact for community relationships.

Charles Waterhouse

Charles Waterhouse was born in 1995 and spent his school years in Heathfield. He then attended Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne where he took a Art & Design Diploma. In 2014 Charles was accepted at NUA (Norwich University of Art) where he gained a First Class Honours Degree in Illustration. He has subsequently shown and exhibited his work in a gallery in Brighton.

Charles is training in all areas of the company.

Charlie Waterhouse

Born in Burwash in 1904, Charlie acquired premises and established C. Waterhouse & Sons, General Builders and Undertakers in 1926. Having completed his apprenticeship, Charlie was a skilled carpenter with a reputation for quality work.

Amongst many local families using Charlie's services over the years, Rudyard Kipling and his wife were clients of the company. Charlie made all the coffins himself, from oak or elm with a hand waxed finish and the undertaking side of the business grew steadily, supported by his wife Louisa in the office, who answered the phone and kept the accounts, assisted by other family members who helped with bearing and other tasks.

Jacky Waterhouse

Jacky is married to Tim Waterhouse and started working in the family business in 2002. Jacky is responsible for the company's sales and bought ledgers, along with the payroll and also handles general enquiries.
