Funeral Service for The Late
Derek Leonard BERRY

Passed away peacefully on 14 October 2021, aged 85 years.

It is with great sadness that the family of Derek Leonard Berry announce his passing on 14 October 2021, aged 85, after a short but brave battle with cancer.

Derek was born on 18th August 1936 in Purley, Surrey. He spent his early childhood as an evacuee in Winsham, Somerset with relatives. He returned to attend Purley Grammar school where he enjoyed rugby, cricket and most sports, developing many life-long friends. He was active in the 2nd Selsdon Scouts becoming a senior scout and then Queen Scout. He did his national service in the Navy, serving as a coder and teacher on HMS Comus in the Far East and Australia, a great adventure which gave Derek a love of the sea.

He started his career with the Crown Agents before joining the Norwich Union. In 1964, he cofounded the financial services firm, Berry Birch and Hawksford which grew from a start-up above a baker’s shop in Croydon to a public company as Berry, Birch and Noble with Derek twice serving as Chairman. He also combined his entrepreneurial spirit and love of sailing by running Freedom Yachts in the UK.

Derek was an active member of Purley John Fisher rugby club, formerly Old Purleians. He played for the club for many years and was very involved in organising fund raisers, running a highly successful Colts programme and serving as the club’s President. He remained a regular supporter at PJF and latterly at Heathfield rugby club.

The greatest love of his life was his wife of 62 years, Jenny. They met at dance lessons as teenagers. After his Naval service, they married and had a family of 3 children and 6 grandchildren. In 1983, Derek and Jenny turned their hand to farming and have spent the last 38 years on Derek’s beloved Broadreed Farm in Five Ashes. He raised pedigree Simmental cattle and took great pleasure in seeing them shown at agricultural shows.

A successful businessman, Derek will be best remembered for his loyalty, generosity and love for friends and family.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales.

Volunteers are the heart of the RNLI. We rely on more than 40,000 volunteers – on lifeboats, at stations, on beaches, and in fundraising.

Some crew members and most lifeguards are full time. They work with other staff to ensure comprehensive safety coverage around our islands. The RNLI is an independent charity with a board of volunteer trustees.
